The jumpsuit. The playsuit. The all-in-one. Whatever you want to call it, it’s a tricky garment to carry off. So why – why damn it! – is it the one high street trend that stares you in the eye from the pages of Grazia magazine, with the irresistible challenge: ‘wear me if you dare, bitch.’
Jumpsuits are the look of now, and any fashion-fan worth her Selfridges store card is no doubt – as you read these very words – wondering somewhere deep in her subconscious which incarnation of the look she will be investing in once the Christmas credit card bill has been paid off.
Here’s a tip from the oracle of good sense: unless you have the proportions of model-of-the-moment Agyness Deyn, the baggy, blousy versions are by far the most sensible option. In fact, they’re pretty much this year’s version of the smock dress – the perfect get-out-clause for anybody who likes their picnicking a bit too much. Steer clear of the compulsion to wrap a big fat belt around the middle of Stella McCartney’s fab floaty floral version, and you can eat for two in it without anybody being the wiser.
As to the question of whether a jumpsuit is suitable attire for a date, the answer is probably yes. The man in question no doubt had a huge crush on Kylie as Charlene in Neighbours, and she lived in hers. Then there’s the fact that to get it off, the whole thing has to come off. Just make sure what’s underneath is up to the exposure.
We hear Stella’s launching a new line of lingerie for Spring as well…
