Last week at the Berlin International Film Festival, comic-rock icon Keith Richards was asked by a journalist what advice he would give to Amy Winehouse. His eloquent response was: "She should get her act together. Apart from that, I have nothing else to say to the bitch". Charming. This current obsession with Winehouse is reaching new heights. Every paper, from the red tops to the broadsheets, are involved in some commentary about her. From her crack-smoking habits to her Grammy-winning bonanza to what other celebrities have to say about her. We all want to know.
'Course writing this is just adding to the rapidly growing mound of column inches. She's irresistible. The scariest aspect of Amy's demise in mental health is that it has done her record label Universal a most favourable turn. 'Back To Black' has now sold in excess of 3.4 million copies and is the highest-selling record of 2007.
Whilst her record label gloats about the continually shifting units, and her album wins accolades and awards, with every tap of the journalist's keyboard Amy's personal life spirals downwards out-of-control into the depths of despair even further.
Enough is enough - if she gives up on herself altogether it will be the record industry and the media who will have blood on their hands.
Kurt Cobain shot himself in the head 14 years ago this April 8th because, according to critics close to him, he hated the corruption he saw in mainstream rock. If this frenzied media approach and warped industry gold-digging doesn't change, Amy Winehouse, and others like her, will soon be joining suit.
