Single of the week
Maps - 'It Will Find You' (Mute)
Mercury Prize nominees the Maps release 'It Will Find You'. Reminiscent of '80s dance pop act the Beloved, whilst having an hypnotic nod to the likes of Four Tet and dare we say the Charlatans?, the Maps have delivered a song that will engage both the young indie heads through to the aging acid house throwbacks.
Also worth checking out on this EP are tracks 'I Was Born Twice' and 'We're Not In Canvas Anymore'. Get your baggy groove on pronto.
DOVE CHOICE
Best of the rest:
Radio Slave - No Sleep (Rekids) - Brighton's favourite producer delivers yet another house cracker.
Nicole Willis - 'Holding On/Invisible Man' (Above The Clouds) - Jimi Tenor's ex-wife is back in the game.
Datarock - 'Fa Fa Fa' - Riton remix' (YAP) - Norway's hip electro band get jiggy with Manchester's Riton.
Gucci Soundsytem - 'Acarpenter - Joakim Remix' (DFA) - Messy UK electro superheroes show off the fact they've released a record on hip NY label DFA.
Hugo - 'Death By Sex' (Tuning Spork) - The title alone wins them a plug.
Album of the week
Turin Brakes - 'Dark On Fire' (Virgin Records)
Some people might splutter at this album being made album of the week, but we think 'Dark On Fire' deserves the spot.
Turin Brakes are duo Olly Knights and Gale (funny name for a bloke) Paridjanian from Balham, London, and this is their fourth album since their first ever EP 'The Door' back in '99.
These guys have nailed the acoustic folk thing without making you want to reach for a bucket or a set of new razor blades. Turin Brakes deliver emotive driven, well constructed, well performed songs, and that is nothing to be sniffed at.
Stand out tracks: 'Other Side', 'Last Chance' and 'For The Fire'. The Crowded House for the NME-reading generation.
If you're a new rave geek, then we suggest you look elsewhere.
