Single of the week
Luke Solomon - 'Demons In The Disco' (Brennan Green remix) (Crosstown Rebels)
Freaks frontman Luke Solomon constantly churns out impressive dancefloor fodder. And the 'Demons EP' is no exception. But this version, touched by New Yorker Brennan Green, is the one to get those tummy butterflies fluttering.
Skippy rays of sunshine burst out over playful synths and a bouncy bassline creating what could easily be the anthem of frolicsome summer fun.
Dove choice
Best of the rest:
Paul Woolford - 'Knives' (20/20 Vision) Electro darling hits back.
The Young Lovers - 'Love You Madly' (Loungin Recordings) Saucy hipsters wear their hearts on their sleeves.
Primary 1 - 'Hold Me Down' (Phantasy) Orange Juice-inspired Funk anyone?
Album of the week
Carl Craig - 'Sessions' (!K7)
Detroit techno genius Carl Craig is still at the forefront of his genre and is able to sell records, even if it is a compilation album such as 'Sessions' released this week on Berlin's !K7.
Famed for his jazz and soul-tinged blend of techno Carl Craig has released under aliases such as Innerzone Orchestra, Paperclip People and Designer Music. He is also the brains behind imprint Planet E which has witnessed releases by the great Kevin Saunderson, Alton Miller and Moodyman.
'Sessions' is a gem for any ardent fan out there. Mixed by the fair hands of Craig himself, expect a slew of inspirational tracks - 'Help Myself' by Chez Damier, 'Falling Up' by Theo Parrish as well as home grown talents in the form of 'In The Trees' by Faze Action - all of which have been given the Carl Craig treatment.
But the killer track has to be 'Sandstorms' - with music like this no wonder Craig has become such a worthy legend.
Stag Choice
Best of the rest:
Hot Chip - 'Made In The Dark' (EMI) The nerdy funksters are back.
Gilles Peterson - 'In The House' (Defected) Noodles anyone?
Luke Solomon - 'The Difference Engine' (Rekids) Music For Freaks main man goes solo.
MUSIC TO... ROCK OUT TO
Hip hop electro upstart Red is soon to make a splash in discerning muso circles. So much so, us here at staganddove asked him to compile his favourite tracks to rock out to.
1. Kenny Loggins – 'Playing With The Boys'
When I was 6, I lived in California. My parents would drive around in the sun, surrounded by palm trees, playing various glorious 80s hits – a lot of which were from the Top Gun Soundtrack. As a result I have a hard on for some of the hair rock on that album, including Playing With The Boys, which is a ridiculous song that is great to do press ups to, scream the insanely high vocals, and generally act like an out of control ape.
2. Rage Against the Machine – 'Take the Power Back'
In terms of rocking riffs and grooves, these guys were on some other shit. A massive influence on me, which can be heard in my band Full Fat. I could’ve picked any track from their first album, but 'Take The Power Back' is one of my faves.
If I hear Rage at a party (or anywhere for that matter), I lose it.
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers – 'Suck My Kiss'
These guys were a massive influence on me. White punk rockers playing rocking funk music. Quite similar to Full Fat in that sense. Again, any track off Blood Sugar Sex Magic (which is one of the greatest albums ever made) will get me flailing around, screaming, air drumming/guitaring/bassing and generally acting like an idiot.
4. Michael Jackson – 'Beat It'
I bloody love Michael. He was another artist my parents would play in the car in California. Play me pretty much anything from 'Off the Wall', 'Thriller' or 'Bad' and I will rock out to it harder than I would to most rock music made today.
Yes, not the most conventional rock out choice, but any top 5 has to have Michael in there somewhere, and let’s face it, 'Beat It' is rocking. It has a rocking riff, and I must’ve rewound the guitar solo a zillion times and just thought, “somebody suck me off.”
5. Andrew WK - 'Get Wet'
This is awful music, but it doesn’t pretend to be anything else. It’s drunk wrestler music.
Betts, who plays drums in Full Fat, always goes on about it and everyone’s always like, “shut up". But at one party he played it seriously loud, and seriously, everyone went nuts. People were on the floor covered in beer and loving it. I had to get a night bus home reeking of beer that night. Needless to say I went home alone.
