FILM TO GRAZE ON NAUGHTY NIBBLES TO

miranda

Acoustica blues singer/songwriter Miranda Barber is about to hit with her stunning debut album 'Lipsí Decision' next month on Barbershop Records. Here she shares with us the movies she loves a cheeky nibble to.

1) In The Mood For Love (2000, Wong Kar Wai)

It's like watching a choreographed dance or swimming through moving art. One piece of music is used throughout, and the slowed down frames and rich colours are as captivating as the stifled desire of the lead characters. Good with a bottle of red and a cheese platter.

2) La Vie En Rose (2007, Olivier Dahan)

…dith Piaf - need I say more? Played like a wild animal by gutsy French bird Marion Cotillard.

Breathtaking, beautiful moments where domestic life walks straight on to the stage to perform. Dramatic, poignant, angry, charged and passionate, with the soundtrack of the greatest chanteuse we've ever known.

Good with pate and crackers and the odd strawberry.

3) Memento (2000, Christopher Nolan)

This movie is like a jigsaw puzzle, with a really simple concept: guy loses memory and has to tattoo himself with clues to get to the bottom of his own mystery only to discover the nasty truth about himself. Awesome film.

Good with popcorn.

4) The Game (1997, David Fincher)

Didn't really think much of Michael Douglas until this film and you gotta love a bit of Sean Penn. Lead character's brother pays big bucks and gives him for his birthday a very sophisticated, all-consuming game - basically - that takes over his life.

Loads of action but you're never quite clear what is real, what is the game, or is it all the same? The lead character goes through a journey of self-discovery.

Good with Il Bacio's special pizza - home delivered.

5) Fargo (1996, Cohen Brothers)

It's all about the characters and the cast is comprised of some of the greatest character actors around. The leads speak with an enchantingly innocent upper mid-west drawl. Frances McDormand is one of my faves (she won an academy award for this role). And of course Steve Buscemi and William H. Macy. There's real comedy in the tragedy.

Good with chicken wings and rice.

TV

Entourage (ITV2, Thursdays, 11pm)

entourageThere's only one word to start off this review - phwoar! Never before has there been a 'dramedy' that features so many fit people (pah, Hollyoaks give over) especially the lead star, movie heart throb Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier).

This hit Bafta award-winning series 4, produced by the great Mark Wahlberg, is by far the flagship show for HBO with its witty script and brutal insight into the Hollywood party lifestyle.

Worth staying up for.

FILM

Happy-Go-Lucky (Mike Leigh, 2008)

The latest film by the genius that is Mike Leigh is true to his style - real people, admirably honest dialogue. But 'Happy-Go -Lucky' just isn't a patch on his earlier moments such as 'Abigail's Party', 'Life Is Sweet' and 'Secrets & Lies'.

The star of the movie is a 30-year-old school teacher called Poppy (Sally Hawkins). And yes, she is happy, to an almost face-slapping irritating manner. She commendably deals with the harsh realities of life, but with some moments of melancholy, which should have been fleshed out further.

The plot is weak with only a smattering of memorable characters, and the spider's web of narrative strands really could have done with some gluing together. Worthy of a viewing nevertheless.
