Let me make this absolutely clear - alcohol and exercise do not mix.Yes, we have all been there. Wobbling home after the pub after a few too many vodka and tonics; stopping for a quick pint when you're out for a run, but although a quick tipple while on the hoof seems like harmless, acceptable behaviour, trust me - it really isn't so smart.
There have been times when I have woken up after a heavy night with no recollection of how my two wheels carried me home, let alone leave me in one piece.
Once I cycled home to south London at 5am after an impromptu session in the East End, off my face with a throat like sandpaper, dry retching at the side of the road every 10 minutes. A 40 minute bike ride took me 2 hours, and the funny looks I was getting from the local hoodies as I retched my way through Deptford in the early hours would have given even Biggie the heebiejeebies.
And as for running after a heavy session - during the peak of my marathon training last year, I was so adamant not to miss out on weekend training run, I went for a 13 miler after two hours sleep - and unsurprisingly got myself in a such as state I was sick for the following week.
The moral of this story is clear, but you know what? At least tackling the roads with a bit of mischief thrown into the mix sure does make life a little more exciting...
